Victoria has a way of making a weekend feel twice as long — in the best possible way. Whether you've just arrived or you've been here a few days and want to go deeper, here's what a local would actually do.
Get Outside First (Before the Weather Changes Its Mind)
We get a lot of rain, won't lie. So when a clear weekend rolls around, you go outside immediately, no hesitation.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail
The Galloping Goose is a paved multi-use trail that runs from downtown all the way out toward Sooke — we're talking serious distance if you want it, or a quick, scenic roll if you don't. You can grab a bike from Ocean Island's bike rental and be on the trail within minutes. Even just the inner section near the harbour is worth it, with herons, cyclists, and the odd otter if you're lucky.
Beacon Hill Park
A ten-minute walk south of downtown gets you to Beacon Hill Park, which is basically Victoria's backyard. Massive old Garry oaks, a small petting farm (yes, really), ocean views at the far end, and zero entry fee. It's where locals actually spend a Sunday morning. The peacocks wandering around are not a glitch — they live there.
Dallas Road Waterfront
Follow the seawall from Beacon Hill toward the water and you'll hit Dallas Road, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca spread out in front of you and the Olympic Mountains visible on a clear day. Worth every step. No ticket required.
Eat Like You Know What You're Doing
Victoria's food scene punches above its weight, especially if you know where to go.
Chinatown
Canada's oldest Chinatown is right here in Victoria, and it's still very much alive. Fan Tan Alley — the narrowest commercial street in Canada — cuts through the middle of it, and the food options around there are genuinely great. Hot pot, bubble tea, hand-pulled noodles: wander in and follow your nose. It's a ten-minute walk from Ocean Island Inn.
Cook Street Village
This neighbourhood just south of downtown has a relaxed, slightly artsy local vibe. Good coffee shops, decent brunch spots, a few indie stores — the kind of place you go when you're not rushing anywhere. Grab a flat white and just walk.
Fisherman's Wharf
For a more touristy-but-actually-fun stop, head to Fisherman's Wharf. Floating homes, harbour seals hanging around the docks looking hopeful, and fresh seafood in paper trays eaten outside. It's a short walk or bike ride along the water from downtown. Check out tourismvictoria.com for any seasonal events happening dockside.
Hit the Water
If the Pacific Ocean is right there, you probably shouldn't ignore it.
Whale Watching with Orca Spirit Adventures
For a proper weekend highlight, a whale watching tour is hard to beat. Orca Spirit Adventures runs about three hours, with both covered-vessel and Zodiac options depending on what you're after. Tours leave from two different docks near the Inner Harbour — ask at the Ocean Island front desk which one your tour uses, and about the guest discounts available for Ocean Island guests. The best months run April through October, and humpbacks, orcas, and sea lions all make regular appearances.
Don't Overlook the Free Stuff
Victoria is genuinely one of the more walkable, affordable cities in BC — there's a lot you can do for next to nothing.
- The Royal BC Museum periodically has free or reduced admission events — check their website before you go.
- The Inner Harbour is free to wander any time, and the buskers on a summer weekend are legitimately entertaining.
- BC Transit covers the whole city cheaply — check bctransit.com for current fares and routes if you want to explore further afield without renting anything.
If you want a pre-built local resource, the Victoria Insiders Guide at Ocean Island is worth a look — it's put together by people who actually live here.
Make the Most of Your Base
A good weekend in Victoria doesn't require a packed itinerary — it requires the right starting point. Having a comfortable place to eat breakfast, charge your gear, and talk to people who know the city is half the battle. The rest is just showing up and paying attention.
Victoria rewards that every single time.
